Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa was constructed during an era marked by global industrialization following World War I and before World War II.

The hotel first took its name from the landmark Teatro Tivoli, which still occupies the western corner of the Avenida de Liberdade. Predating the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa, the Pensao Tivoli (a small boarding house) first opened its doors next to the theater in 1933. This quaint building it later grew into a full-service hotel in 1940. Unfortunately, the crises wrought by the Spanish Civil War and World War II set back any further plans to expand the business into the 1950s. The owners of the Pensao Tivoli finally gained enough open a second location across the street in 1957. It is this structure that constitutes the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa. The hotel quickly became immensely popular among the many American and European travelers who flocked to Lisbon during the 1960s. The Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa continued to be among the city’s most renowned holiday destinations ever since.

Hotel Timeline

The Tivoli hospitality tradition began with the opening of Pensão Tivoli, a small boardinghouse beside Lisbon’s Teatro Tivoli. The opening of Pensão Tivoli marked the beginning of what developed into the international Tivoli Hotels & Resorts brand.

The original boardinghouse was expanded and developed into a full-service hotel. The effects of the Spanish Civil War and World War II delayed further expansion of the Tivoli business until the 1950s.

Portuguese architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro contributed to a redesign that helped define the hotel’s sophisticated mid-century Portuguese identity. The available source identifies the decade but not an exact year.

The owners opened a second and larger hotel across Avenida da Liberdade. This building constitutes the present Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa.

The hotel became especially popular with American and European travelers arriving in Lisbon during the 1960s, helping establish it as one of the city’s most prestigious addresses. Portuguese actress and cinema personality Beatriz Costa moved into the hotel and remained a resident for approximately 30 years. Her former accommodation later became the Beatriz Costa Suite.

Tivoli Hotels & Resorts celebrated its 90th anniversary, tracing the brand’s origins to the opening of the original Lisbon property in 1933.
