Originally known as The Multnomah Hotel, Embassy Suites by Hilton Portland Downtown has been providing exceptional service and tastefully appointed accommodations since 1912. Throughout its storied history, the hotel has welcomed numerous guests, including Charles Lindbergh, Elvis Presley, and nine U.S. presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Richard Nixon. The Neo-Classical styled, predominantly all-suite hotel seamlessly combines the original architecture and historic features with modern conveniences. Guests are able to enjoy the hotel’s downtown Portland location, a fully equipped fitness center, an indoor swimming pool, and complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast and evening cocktail reception.

Discover

  • Marvel at the stately architecture and gorgeous appointments of this century-old hotel, beginning with 24 marble and terracotta columns that grace the lobby and support an elegant high ceiling. Designed in the Neoclassical style, crystal chandeliers and grand staircases create an air of glamor and sophistication.
  • Meander through the hotel and notice the emblems that read “MH” carved into the molding in the lobby and on the balconies. MH stood for The Multnomah Hotel, the hotel’s name a century ago, named after a local Native American tribe—a branch of the Chinooks, called the Multnomah.
  • Discover Skidmore Fountain in Portland’s Historic Old Town. Designated a Portland Historic Landmark in 2005 and sculpted to resemble fountains of Versailles, it stands 14 feet tall and is fashioned of bronze and granite.

  • Explore Portland’s Shanghai Tunnels, a series of underground passageways that were originally built to move goods from the ships docked on the Willamette to the basement storage areas in taverns, restaurants, and hotels and to avoid streetcar and train traffic.
  • Visit the very moving Japanese American Historical Plaza. See the beautifully carved stones that tell of the hardships suffered by Japanese immigrants and the incarceration of persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II, and honors those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces while their families were in the camps.
  • Travel to the Oregon Musuem of Science and Industry (OMSI) nearby. Founded in 1944, this outstanding cultural institution features a series of interactive exhibits that focus on the natural sciences, technology, and industry.

Experience

  • Attend a thrilling theatrical performance at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Designed with beautiful Italian rococo architecture, this stunning venue has hosted a all kinds of live entertainment since 1928.
  • Tour the Portland Art Museum. This world-renowned cultural institution is home to an extensive collection of Asian, American, and Native American artwork.
  • Experience the historic Columbia River Highway about 30 miles east and discover spectacular Multnomah Falls, a natural waterfall that rushes from 620 feet above.

Taste

  • Savor locally sourced ingredients, fresh organic fare, and all-around delicious food at Mother’s Bistro. This Portland landmark is a must-try destination for homemade food that, as they say, tastes “like mom’s cooking, only a bit better.”
  • Taste the best that Portland has to offer by sampling one of its incredible craft beers. The city boasts the most craft brewers per capita in the world. The Willamette Valley is a great destination for wine lovers, located less than an hour from downtown Portland. Portland is also known for its coffee. Stumptown Coffee Roasters and Coava Coffee Roasters are two of the city’s favorites.
  • Grab a pizza and brew at Apizza Scholls. Known for its thin crust, the opportunity to build a made-to-order pie, or order a house specialty including the Diablo Blanco and Tartufo2 The Electric Boogaloo.
