Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza’s story began in 1929 when businessman John J. Emery envisioned a multipurpose commercial property in Cincinnati that would rival New York City’s finest structures. Carew Tower was finished in 1931, and with it debuted the new St. Netherland Plaza hotel. The hotel was luxurious and featured the lavish use of rare Brazilian rosewood, marble, and custom nickel-silver fixtures. The rooms were fashioned with stylized Egyptian décor, floral motifs, and some of the world’s most remarkable French Art Deco treasures. Proudly stewarding this spectacular legacy, Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and became a charter member of Historic Hotels of America. Alongside AAA Four Diamond accommodations, guests to Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza will encounter the fine murals, Rookwood Pottery fountain, and famed Hall of Mirrors of this historic hotel, all which have been exquisitely restored.

Discover

  • Discover the stunning French and Egyptian motifs at Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, a 1931 French Art Deco hotel. A U.S. National Historic Landmark, Carew Tower is an early example of the “city within a city” concept similar to Rockefeller Center in New York City.
  • Stand where Elvis Presley once stood. Presley frequented the hotel while traveling the country on tour. Once while staying at the hotel, the star astonished the staff by walking into the kitchen to extend his gratitude to the chefs for a delicious impromptu meal: a hamburger.
  • Gaze at the vista of the city and across the river to Kentucky from the Carew Tower Observation Deck.

Explore

  • Explore the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. This renowned cultural center chronicles the history of slavery in the United States, and the role that the Underground Railroad played in dismantling the institution.
  • Visit the William Howard Taft National Historic Site. A U.S. National Historic Landmark, the building once served as the childhood home for the 27th U.S. President and 10th Chief Justice of the United States. It is now a museum that is dedicated to preserving his legacy.
  • Visit the restored home of Harriet Beecher Stowe to learn how literature can change the world. Stowe was an iconic figure within the American anti-slavery movement. Her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in 1852, vehemently denounced the insitution of slavery and became a bestseller.

Experience

  • Tour the artwork of the Cincinnati Art Museum. This renowned gallery has over 67,000 distinctive pieces of artwork in its collection.
  • Attend a performance at the historic Cincinnati Music Hall. Originally opened in 1878, the theatre is home to such acts at the Cincinnati Ballet, the Cincinnati Opera, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
  • Experience the historic Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. This spectacular destination is home to countless wildlife exhibits, as well as over 3,000 different species of exotic plants.

Taste

  • Enjoy a slice of Buckeye Pie. Buckeye Pie is a chocolate and peanut butter pie in a cookie crust inspired by the fudge treat known as buckeye candies. Find the decadent dessert on 1931 Restaurant’s menu
  • Delight in another local classic known as goetta. Historically significant to southern Ohio and northern Kentucky, goetta consists of a delicious combination of pork sausage and oats that have been fried together on a griddle. The oirgin of goetta can be traced back to German migrants to the area.
  • Savor some of Graeter’s ice cream. In operation since 1870, Graeter’s brand of ice cream is celebrated throughout the city for its distinctively dense texture, as well as for its creamy flavors.
