"The Boardroom" Suite
The St. James Hotel suites are the finest place to stay in Red Wing, Minnesota. Architectural engineers masterfully aligned modern day conveniences with historical 19th-century settings and the storied past of Hamline University. As Minnesota’s oldest university, Hamline’s first home was in Red Wing from 1854-1869. Mantles, arches, windows, furniture, and original wood flooring were gathered and re-purposed from the original President’s House in St. Paul have been incorporated into each of our Hamline Suites.

Guestroom 301, "Twin Cities"
Architectural styles differ from the Historic section to the Riverside. The Historic section is of the Italianate style, which was popular in the U.S. in the early to mid-19th century. Tall, narrow windows, a low-pitch hipped roof and overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets characterize this style. The rooms tend to be square or rectangular in shape and boast higher ceilings. The hallways of the Historic section are almost twice as wide as a modern hallway as they were built to accommodate the hoop skirts of the era, especially since “well-bred” women did not go anywhere without taking the arm of an escort or another female companion.

En route to the guestrooms in the Historic section, guests will find bits of history on the walls with art and antiques from the past century. Old doorways remain as “Historical Vignettes," where pictures and stories from Red Wing’s past hang in abundance. A picture of each guestroom’s namesake is placed in each space. On the wall of the third-floor landing of the grand staircase hangs a quilt commemorating those who lost their lives in the tragic Lake Pepin Sea Wing disaster.

Architect Edward P. Bassford created a structural masterpiece when he first designed the St. James Hotel at the start of the 1870s. According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, the St. James Hotel is among, “the last remaining large ‘river town’ hotels along the Mississippi River in Minnesota.” Furthermore, the agency proclaimed that: “It remains today as a major architectural landmark within the central business district of Red Wing and is representative of the once thriving role this community played in the early history of Minnesota.”

Standing four stories tall, architect Edward P. Bassford placed the magnificent structure upon a unique “L-shaped” foundation. The entire basement featured cut limestone blocks, while the remainder of the building contained red brick. A single spectacular cornice crowned the building, complete with pediments and bracketing. Many subsequently hailed the building as a modern marvel at the time, for it featured steam heat, indoor plumbing, and a fully furnished, state-of-the-art dining facility.

The St. James Hotel is also one of the best Italianate structures standing in all of Minnesota. One of the first examples of Renaissance Revival—style architecture, Italianate design principles are some of the most historic ever used in the United States.
