With its central location on Market Street, the new hotel quickly became celebrated as the “Cornerstone of York,” hosting countless luminaries like Hank Aaron, Marian Anderson, Ray Charles, Joe DiMaggio, and Ella Fitzgerald. Mail chutes became a staple as buildings grew vertically in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Cutler was the sole manufacturer of official U.S. Postal Service mailboxes from 1983 to 1904.
