Women have made significant strides in American history and many have ties to Historic Hotels. Here are a few hotels and the women who have left an imprint on their history.
The Hermitage Hotel (1910)
Nashville, Tennessee
Just a block from the state Capitol, both Pro- and Anti-Suffrage groups headquartered at the Hermitage Hotel for six weeks leading up to the final vote to ratify the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote.
The Willard InterContinental, Washington, DC (1818)
Washington, DC
Julia Ward Howe penned the immortal words of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" in her guestroom at The Willard.
The Redbury New York (1903)
New York, New York
This historic hotel originally opened in 1903 as the first hotel in New York City for single, professional women. At that time, it was a haven in the city for progressive women.
La Fonda on the Plaza (1922)
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter earned a full-time job in 1910 as the principal architect at La Fonda. Her thoughtful design choices and romantic ideals are in evidence throughout the present-day hotel. She went on to design other notable hotels including El Tovar Hotel, Phantom Ranch, and Bright Angel Lodge in the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.
JW Marriott Essex House New York (1931)
New York, New York
Lily Pons, French-American was leading coloratura soprano at the Paris Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, and at the Metropolitan Opera for more than 25 years. She lived at the Essex House in the 60s. Miss. Pons was known to keep a pet jaguar in the hotel, letting it roam loose in her quarters.
