Checking in to the Past: A stay at Big Spring’s Hotel Settles by Rayanna Hoeft for Authentic Texas

Historically, Big Spring was considered the “crossroads of the West.” The town was aptly named after a historic landmark, a natural spring that often served as an oasis, a place of gathering and respite for Indigenous peoples, westward explorers and eventually settlers as they made their way across the dry, dusty and sometimes lonely land. For centuries, this vital water source symbolized both survival and connection, a meeting place where cultures and stories intertwined in the heart of West Texas.

A different type of oasis took shape in the early 20th century; although much changed in form, it still served the purpose of providing a calming place for rest and rejuvenation for those passing through the area.
