Historic Hotels of America® Marks Preservation Month by Extending Special Rate to Supporters of Partner Nonprofits

WASHINGTON, DC --- May 1, 2026 --- In recognition of Preservation Month, Historic Hotels of America® is celebrating the vital role nonprofit partners play in safeguarding historic places by extending a special travel benefit to their supporters. Through official nonprofit partnerships, eligible donors and supporters can access the Friends of Historic Hotels of America rate code, unlocking exclusive savings at participating member hotels.

The Friends of Historic Hotels of America rate offers travelers up to 30 percent off the Best Available Rate at participating historic hotels and resorts across the United States and beyond. This benefit is available to supporters of Historic Hotels of America’s nonprofit preservation partners, reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting and promoting historic destinations.

Historic Hotels of America has worked with its hotel members for years to make this exclusive historic hotel rate available to key donors and supporters of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where Historic Hotels of America is the official program for recognizing, celebrating, and promoting the country’s finest historic hotels.

Now, by forging partnerships with nonprofit preservation groups around the country, the program makes the same rates available to the supporters of these groups, which represent an estimated 28 million households.

“Preservation Month is an opportunity to celebrate the enduring impact of historic preservation and the many organizations, donors, and volunteers who make this work possible,” said Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Vice President, Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. “The Friends of Historic Hotels of America special rate is our way of saying  ‘thank you’ to those who help protect historic places across the country. By extending this rate to supporters of our not-for-profit partners and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, we are connecting preservation advocates with meaningful travel experiences that bring history to life. Historic hotels exist today because of generations of dedicated stewards, and they continue to be preserved for future travelers through that same commitment and continued support.”

The nonprofit organizations that partner with Historic Hotels of America support a wide range of preservation initiatives, including saving historic landmarks, advocating for heritage conservation, and educating the public about the importance of preserving historic places. Examples of current partners are George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Preservation League of New York State (NYS), The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, and Colorado Preservation Inc.

Throughout the month of May, Historic Hotels of America will feature the many hotels within the program that make the Friends of Historic Hotels of America (code:NHP) rate available to preservation supporters. Participating hotels have been vetted for this promotion: they have the “NHP” rate loaded and widely available for 2026, bookable exclusively on HistoricHotels.org, and offer at a minimum a 10 percent discount off the hotel’s Best Available Rate. Nearly one-third of Historic Hotels of America’s over 300 member historic hotels have the rate loaded as of May 2026.

Preservation Month features will appear on Historic Hotels of America’s social media accounts and in its consumer newsletter, Discover & Explore.

The tradition of celebrating historic preservation in May dates to the first Preservation Week in May 1973, affirmed by a joint Congressional Resolution and a Proclamation signed by President Richard Nixon that winter to make the celebration official. The Proclamation states, “As the pace of change accelerates in the world around us, Americans more than ever need a lively awareness of our roots and origins in the past on which to base our sense of identity in the present and our directions for the future.” Mayors and governors throughout the country have since added their proclamations to President Nixon's. The week was made into a month-long celebration in 2005.

Since 2005, local preservation groups, state historical societies, and business and civic organizations across the country celebrate the preservation movement in May through events that promote historic places and demonstrate the social and economic benefits of historic preservation.

As the country prepares to mark significant anniversaries such as America’s 250th and the Route 66 Centennial in 2026, historic hotels provide a meaningful setting for travelers to experience these moments.
