Live like royalty at Appleby Castle. Offering 12 guestrooms in the Keep and three cottages on-site, Appleby Castle can satisfy any elegant dream. Each uniquely designed guestroom within the castle holds a collection of interesting books that our customers are welcome to read. But while the castle itself may be thousands of years in age, the amenities are modern. Keep comfortable with accessories like a tea kettle, a coffee maker, Wi-Fi and wired internet, bathrobes, a hair dryer, complimentary toiletries, blackout drapes or curtains, an iron and ironing board, a non-working fireplace, and a separate sink with mirror in each room.

Guestrooms:

The Clifford Bedroom - The Clifford room is situated along the hallway of the third floor and is the bedroom of choice for newlyweds. It is decorated in a medieval-inspired style with wall hangings and an antique wardrobe and furnishings, including a 17th-century king-size bed and antique desk. The bedroom window overlooks the Inner Bailey. Two steps across the hallway is a large private bathroom with a roll-top bath, underfloor heating, and a separate walk-in shower. There is an adjoining door to the Vipont bedroom if needed.

The Thanet Bedroom - The Thanet Bedroom features a king-size brass bed or, alternatively, two single beds. Antique furnishings, tapestries, and an exclusive private bathroom with shower plus an additional sink in the bedroom.

The Evidence Room - The Evidence Room is situated in the northeast tower, close to the State Bedroom, with tremendous views overlooking the Pennines and meandering River Eden. This room is dominated by a luxurious 17th-century four-poster oak bed with traditional Westmorland carving. Antique furnishings, tapestries, and an ensuite bathroom with a shower plus an additional sink in the bedroom complete the relaxing scene.

The Hothfield Bedroom - The light and airy Hothfield room is situated at the southern corner of the Castle, with amazing views of the inner and outer bailey and the Norman Keep. This guestroom features a king-size brass bed or, alternatively, two single beds and a private ensuite bathroom.

The State Bedroom - The State Bedroom is situated in the northeast tower, looking across Castle Park to the River Eden and the Pennines. It features two 16th-century four-poster queen-size beds (one with Lady Anne Clifford’s headboard dated 1590, the year of her birth) and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub and spa. All the walls are hung with 16th-century tapestries, which are complemented by antique wardrobes and other furnishings. It is a fine example of how the very wealthy decorated their rooms before the advent of wallpaper, and very few rooms like it exist today.

The Atkinson Bedroom - The Atkinson Bedroom is situated in the old former servants’ quarters on the fourth floor of the castle. This large spacious room features a super-king-size brass bed, built-in wardrobe, desk, and private ensuite bathroom. There is also the option of separating the mattress into two single beds.

The Vipont Bedroom - The Vipont Bedroom is situated at the top of the 17th-century staircase, with a window view overlooking the Inner Bailey. The guestroom features a large king-size four-poster oak bed, antique furnishings, and oak paneling. A large bathroom with a shower is across the hallway.

The Tufton Bedroom - The Tufton room is situated on the southern side of the Castle with views overlooking the Inner Bailey and the Keep. This bedroom features two 17th-century double-size beds, an antique wardrobe, desk, and furnishings, a sink with antique mirror, and a separate large private bathroom with shower and bath.

The Russel Suite - The Russel Suite is on the fourth floor of the castle amongst the former servants' quarters. This enormous room features a super-king-size mattress with an ornately carved oak bedframe. There is also a separate bathroom with double sinks, a walk-in shower and a large roll-top bathtub. There is also the option of separating the mattress into two single beds.

The De Morville Bedroom - The De Morville Bedroom is in the former servants' quarters on the fourth floor of the Castle. This large and spacious room features an ensuite bathroom with a shower and a super-king-size brass bed.

The Sackville Bedroom - The Sackville Bedroom is in the former servants' quarters on the fourth floor of the Castle. The high ceiling and ensuite bathroom make this elegant room the perfect retreat. With a double brass bed, a separate bathroom, and antique furnishings, it’s a beautiful respite.

Le Meschin Suite - Le Meshin Suite is located on the ground floor. The Le Meschin Suite has two bedrooms with a super-king-size brass bed in each. There is a shared private bathroom with a shower.

Cottages:

Coleridge Cottage - The Coleridge Cottage is located adjacent to the archway entrance to the inner bailey of the castle. This two-story cottage is warm and cozy and was added to the castle in the 17th century by Lady Anne Clifford. It was renovated in 2017 and has many 17th-century features, such as a surrounding fireplace and stone window frames and lentils. This cottage features two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Downstairs there is an open-plan living area with a sofa bed, wrap-around lounge, dining suite and kitchen, log burner, and TV.

Wordsworth Cottage - Named after the famous poet William Wordsworth, who lived in the area, this cottage features two bathrooms, a downstairs living area with a sofa bed, a wrap-around lounge, a dining suite and kitchen, a log burner, and a TV. Upstairs there are two bedrooms with a super king-size brass bed and two singles.

Nightingale Cottage - This single-story cottage is the choice of newlyweds. There is one large bedroom with a super-king-size brass bed, an open-plan living area with a wraparound lounge, a sofa bed, and a kitchen. The bathroom features a jacuzzi bathtub with a walk-in shower and washing machine.
