  • Staff is great, grounds are beautiful; rooms are caught in a time warp (not a good one)

I stayed at Airlie for one night for a conference. It rained heavily while I was there so I was not able to really explore the gardens but the setting is beautiful and the grounds well-tended. Airlie is not at all suited to persons with mobility issues -- the buildings are far-flung, there are stairs literally everywhere, and while the hotel attempts to compensate with a shuttle and extremely patient/helpful staff (especially Brooke!), it's a place for the agile. I stayed in a room with a springy bed, new but very cramped bathroom, and limited cable TV service. Everything worked and the WiFi was good but standard was basic. Your experience really depends on why you are there. For a conference, it was good enough. The food was quite good and that a real attempt had been made to respect various food restrictions was apparent.

  • Good hotel for the price

My husband and 2 young children stayed in this hotel over the weekend. The 2 night getaway package for 219 included dinner one night and breakfast two days plus your nightly hotel fee and it was a great deal. The place is beautiful and the kids had a great time running free. Tons of spots to relax and rest. The rooms are old and small but its a historic hotel so its expected. BUT we checked in to our first room and it waz full of ants. They moved us but didnt comp us with anything at all. Harrys is the restraunt onsite...great place and good food but long wait and service times and i read this on other reviews also so seems to be an ongoing issue.

Close yo the great meadows which is why we picked this place.

  • Beautiful grounds; dated and second tier facilities.

We were at Airlie to babysit while our daughter attended a wedding. The grounds are undeniably stunning, and the people are generally delightful. However, the rooms leave plenty to be desired. They are very small, and the walls are really thin. We both had to move after our first night to avoid noisy neighbors (not entirely Airlie's fault) and faulty air conditioning units (totally Airlie's fault). I felt like I was staying in a 1960's vintage Howard Johnson's. And don't get me started on the food. Harry's is so bad i will write a separate review (but in case you're wondering, the rating will be TERRIBLE), and when we tried to order room service ten minutes before it nominally ended at 9:00, no one answered the phone or returned the message we left on the tape. Our second night, we ended up ordering a pizza (very good) from a restaurant in Warrenton. Definitely not someplace I will be rushing back to.

The grounds are beyond gorgeous! And the amenities are wonderful - walks, ponds, bikes. I was there for a family wedding. My room was small, but adequate. Nothing special. Harry's restaurant was extremely busy, but very good. The staff were wonderful, friendly, helpful. They have shuttles available all the time. Unfortunately my room was near a pool, & there were young "adults" in the pool area partying raucously until nearly 3 am. It took 2 calls to security to quiet them. I got very little sleep that night. I think management needs to stay on top of things like that, Also, very poor signage. We arrived after dark & could not find the front desk, They said Go to the yellow building. There are many buildings, all yellow. One-ways that made it hard to navigate. Once we got settled in, we were fine. Except for sleeping.

  • All good except the room

Cons: Room in the Berkshire building was musty. Many of the other people I stayed with said the same. Maybe they should switch to a laminate/vinyl flooring instead of carpet? Lots of fruit flies in the room too.

They need better signage along the road. Had no idea the main building was only for check-in, dining, conference rooms. And all of the other buildings simply aren't labeled from the main road. Both sides of the road should be riddled with signage for first timers.

Pros: The estate is wonderful. Great scenery, lots of walking paths, historic buildings, wildlife, etc.. Had burgers that were as fresh as you could imagine (moos on premises). Staff was very friendly and professional. Conference rooms had plenty of space.
