  • Why Not.

    by Len S on 2018-09-18 02:35 pm

We were travelling thru Colorado and heard about the Strater from friends. Arrived via the Million Dollar Hwy from the north. Views were fabulous as the forest fires were nearly out----no smoke. We checked in to our room which was furnished with antique furniture. The room was beautifully decorated with old wall paper. There was a gurst book in the room which begged to be signed. (some people thought the room was haunted, HAHA) There was a complimentary box of chocolates from the Rocky Mtn. Chocolate factory on the bed. We had supper in the Saloon downstairs. Piano player was fantastic. On retiring for the evening there was quite a bit of noise from the roof-top bar across the street, but eventually got quieter as the establishment closed down. Beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was in the hotel next morning. Very good. We recommend trying out the Strater (just because). You won't be disappointed.

  • UNIQUE HOTEL - GOOD BUT NOT GREAT

by Spekjr on 2018-09-17 10:39 am

The hotel has a lot of history and it's very unique. It's a great hotel if you want something different from a chain hotel. The inside is beautiful and the decor is great and it was very clean. It's downtown right by the train depot and all the trendy shops and restaurants are within waling distance. The AC doesn't get super cold, luckily we could open the window and cool it off a bit at night. Parking is across the street or 2 blocks away if the first lot is full. There isn't an easy way to get your luggage inside the hotel and once you do the elevator is SMALL. The Saloon is fun and is a great place to hang out and relax. If you want convenience and an ice cold AC you may want to go to one of the known chain hotels.

Thank you for your review. We do pride ourselves on keeping the historic hotel and affiliated restaurants clean and neat and we strive to provide the best service we can. We are limited by our historic nature to some of the amenities such as parking in the middle of downtown, and AC that can provide a level of coolness to satisfy every guest. We appreciate your stay with us and hope you will visit us again.

  • Hotel was nice but rooms were not real comfortable.

    by Mobile35860 on 2018-09-17 04:55 am

I am 5'1 and barely fit in the shower. My husband is 6'2" so you can only imagine how he fit. The rooms were meant for single travelers. The hotel is beautiful but I think next time we will stay the Doubletree.

  • Nice hotel for something different

    by aericks0n on 2018-09-13 01:04 pm

We stayed in the Strater for a night while passing through Durango. My overall review would be that the hotel itself is nice if you are looking for a change from the typical "chain hotels" but the rooms (at least ours) were not the most comfortable overall for this price range. They were small and a little musty. I know both of these are not atypical for such old landmark type hotels but these were a little more so than we expected. We did not eat there but tried out one of the bars and the service there was great. I am giving this a 4/5 because a 3 rates it "fair" - the overall experience was good, better than fair but not outstanding either.

Thank you for your review and understanding the nature of historic hotels. Historic hotels (including ours) have some smaller rooms and some much larger rooms! We do hope that you come back, we would be sure to get you in a room that you love!

  • Historic hotel with interesting decor

    by Mary H on 2018-09-05 02:23 pm

We stayed here on a recent trip to Colorado. It is very historic and beautifully decorated in period pieces. Because of the age, there is only one elevator, and it is a bit slow. The room was small but comfortable. Since I am only 5ft 3ins. I found it difficult to get in and out of the rather high bed. The A/C left a bit to be desired, but overall our two night stay was most enjoyable and the included breakfast was very good.
