  • A MUST STAY!!

We've been to Durango several times and have stayed at The Strater Hotel the last 2 times. We love this old historic hotel for its beauty and location.
The front desk welcoming staff was very friendly, helped us with bags, explained exactly where and how to get to their parking lot. (some streets are one-way)
Room was very pretty and spacious, with the old furnishing and clean. We booked a QN and twin room on the first floor.
Ate a late lunch in the Belle Saloon, Happy Hour in The OFFiCE and a lovely dinner in The Mahogany Grille.
We, also, took the Durango Stagecoach Ride, that begins at the hotel, although, we heard the hotel is separate from this business. Just a courtesy to begin the ride in front of the old historic site.
    5 STARS!!!

  • Not my cup of tea

Stayed there while on a tour. Others on the tour had a better experience. Our room was dusty and the mattress felt as if it had been there for a hundred years. The bathroom was TINY. There was too much furniture crammed into a tiny room. The air conditioning was nearly nonexistent. The included breakfast was unimpressive.

That said, the staff was nice.

We stayed here once and liked it so much, came back. Great decor, good restaurants, staff friendly and nice. Small rooms, but still great decor, comfortable. Old Western type salon downstairs, neat place.

  • If Louis likes it, it must have been good!

Strater Hotel was built in 1887 and is located in downtown Durango, It is a Colorado landmark a few blocks from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which is something to see while visiting! There are so many fun things offered that you need to allow a full day or longer to do it. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and shopping.
There are 3 dining establishments in the hotel, The Mahogany Grille, The Diamond Belle Saloon, and The Office Spiritorium. The hotel is home to the Louis L'Amour Room which is Room 222 where we stayed! Look up the history behind Louis L'Amour and you will begin to envision him sitting in the chair at the table contemplating his next plot. My only complaint would be the air conditioner was a little loud and since I'm a light sleeper that didn't help. The mattress was older and could have been replaced, but it was comfortable. The staff was friendly and the hotel itself was impeccably clean and decorated beautifully! I will definitely return to do some more site seeing.

This beautiful, historic hotel has great charm and character. It has a restaurant and saloon (bar food) on site. Each morning each floor has a coffee bar, I loved this convenience. The staff were very friendly. Great location for seeing the downtown area. They have several monitored parking lots near hotel.
