Historic Hotels of America® Announces The American Queen Steamboat as a Special Legacy Member

WASHINGTON, DC – July 15, 2013 – Historic Hotels of America is proud to designate the American Queen Steamboat Company an “Official Partner Organization” and the American Queen Steamboat as its first "Special Legacy Member” of Historic Hotels of America.

The American Queen Steamboat is making an important contribution to preserving America’s heritage and culture. The American Queen Steamboat has faithfully maintained its authenticity, sense of place, and architectural integrity and is recognized as having historic significance. The American Queen commemorates a method of travel from American History as steamboats ruled the waterways during the 19th century. Passengers traveling onboard the American Queen Steamboat can stay in Historic Hotels ideally situated near to the ports of call pre and post cruise such as the Omni William Penn, Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza Hotel and many others.

The American Queen Steamboat is the only remaining overnight passenger steamboat in America and likely, in the world. She carries forward the legacy of her predecessor company, the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. and is the last of her kind from the 19th century “Way West” that steamboat travel made possible. She was painstakingly designed with extensive research (two years funded by the Delta Queen Steamboat Co in 1993 – 1994) for authenticity in creating and preserving the 19th century: style, steam powered mechanical paddlewheel propulsion system, American 19th century antique furnishings throughout all staterooms and public rooms, Tiffany lights, steam powered calliope, period art, original Twain era photograph museum and history library of 1800’s American river travel. She has the largest private collection of Tiffany lamps in the United States. The 19th century steam engines were salvaged from the sunken 1932 steamboat “Kennedy” in the Missouri River in 1994 and rebuilt by the engineers of the Delta Queen for the American Queen Steamboat.

“We are delighted to welcome The American Queen Steamboat in partnership with Historic Hotels of America.” said Lawrence Horwitz, executive director of Historic Hotels Worldwide. “The American Queen Steamboat represents the important impact that steamboats had on America’s history. Travelers can enjoy luxury, culture and learn a great deal about American history while aboard this magnificent vessel.”

The American Queen Steamboat is proud to support historic preservation. Beginning June 30, 2013, it will donate $5 to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in support of their Campaign to Save America’s National Treasures for guests booking tours on the American Queen Steamboat or the American Empress cruises. American Queen Steamboat and American Empress guests will also have the opportunity to visit several of these National Treasures sites during many of the cruises. National Treasures are irreplaceable, critically threatened places across the country. The National Trust is taking direct action to protect these places and promote their history and significance to help advance the cause of preservation nationally.
