Barnsley Resort is the culmination of nearly two centuries of history in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The grounds originally housed a 19th-century manor home named Woodlands born from owner Godfrey Barnsley’s vision of creating an extraordinary estate for his wife, Julia, in the fresh air of Northern Georgia. The historic estate found new life in the late 20th century through an ambitious preservation effort that restored its historic gardens and protected the Italianate Manor House Ruins of Woodlands at its heart. Today, guests of Barnsley Resort can explore over 3,000 acres of restored boxwood gardens, lakes and ponds, horseback riding trails, hiking trails, and a championship golf course designed by Jim Fazio. Whether visiting the site’s history museum, enjoying renowned farm-to-table dining, or relaxing in the charming inn and cottage accommodations situated across the beautiful grounds, Barnsley Resort invites visitors to gather and take part in the story of this remarkable destination.

Discover

  • Discover the Manor House Ruins at Barnsley Resort. The Manor House Ruins are the romantic remains of a 19th-century Italianate estate called Woodlands that originally sat on the Barnsley Resort grounds. Woodlands was created by Godfrey Barnsley in the 1840s for his wife Julia, who passed away before the estate home was finished.
  • Wander through the restored boxwood parterre and formal gardens, among the oldest surviving landscape features on the estate. These gardens reflect Victorian design principles with geometric planting beds and a symmetrical layout.
  • Learn about the Barnsley family and the evolution of the estate through exhibits at the Barnsley Resort Museum. Historic photographs, personal artifacts, and original documents are housed in the former kitchen building of the original Woodlands estate.

Explore

  • Explore the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site in nearby Cartersville, where six earthen mounds built between 1000 and 1550 A.D. preserve the funeral sites of one the most influential indigenous communities in the Southeast.
  • Visit the Booth Western Art Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate museum exhibiting art and popular culture of the American West. Or discover regional stories at the Bartow History Museum, which interprets the people and industries that shaped northwest Georgia, and the Adairsville Depot History Museum, where exhibits explore the town's railroad legacy and Civil War connections.
  • Enjoy the landscapes of North Georgia at Red Top Mountain State Park, Lake Allatoona, and Pine Log Mountain. Visitors can hike wooded trails, paddle quiet waters, and take in views of the Appalachian foothills. Join guided hikes at Barnsley Resort to the Overlook for views of the grounds and surrounding foothills.

Experience

  • Enjoy outdoor recreation across the 3,000 acres of grounds, including horseback riding, sporting clays, hiking and biking trails, fishing, canoeing, pickleball, disc golf, and championship golf on the Jim Fazio-designed course.
  • Participate in seasonal programs and hands-on workshops, including guided history walks, wreath-making classes, poolside family movies, gardening workshops, birding excursions, and holiday events held throughout the year.
  • Experience the serene Northern Georgia estate after hours. The illuminated Manor House Ruins glow from across the grounds, and the firepit is open for conversation, relaxation, and s'mores making.

Taste

  • Enjoy Barnsley Resort's signature dining experience, Jules, is inspired by Julia B. Barnsley, the daughter of Godfrey & Julia Barnsley. Jules serves inspired Southern cuisine with seasonal garden ingredients set in an original outbuilding on the 19th-century grounds.
