Experience the Lunar Crater National Natural Landmark, a maar that formed when groundwater came into contact with lava. This crater was used by NASA in 1972 to train the Apollo astronauts for the lunar landing site. The astronauts performed two rover traverses over the volcanic crater and also practiced rock sample collection and checklist procedures.
