Circus Room
A Walla Walla native, Harper Joy moved to Spokane in 1926 before he "ran away" to the circus for three weeks. After that initial stint in the circus, Joy was hooked, and made a career as a clown for the Ringling Brothers Circus for nine years. Louis Davenport, a friend of Joy, wanted to surprise Joy with a dedicated room that reflected his whimsical work. Davenport had the room painted by Rutgers VanderLoeff and Associates, who included in the murals real-life friends and contemporaries from Joy’s time in the circus. The room opened in upon Joy’s retirement in 1935. The Circus Room is now furnished with two king-size beds and a bathroom with a shower.
