About the Architect +
Philip Mackenzie Ross was a Scottish golf course architect most prominently known in the mid-20th century for his restoration of courses in France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal after their neglect during World War II. Most famously, Mackenzie Ross restored the golf course at Turnberry, Scotland that had been used as an airfield. Born to a father who also constructed golf courses in Scotland, Mackenzie Ross was trained by architect Tom Simpson in the 1920s before working on his own. In 1930 he was commissioned for the scenic 18-hole course at the Hotel Palácio do Estoril, Golf & Wellness. In 1971 Mackenzie Ross was elected the first president of the British Association of Golf Course Architects.
