"The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - MGallery by Sofitel origins begin in the 1890s, when Chinese entrepreneur Kwik Djoen Eng arrived in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta to establish himself within the region’s spice trade. By 1918, he constructed a beautiful manor in the center of Yogyakarta. The building is an example of Indonesian-Dutch architecture. After the Great Depression, the manor sat dormant until another businessman transformed it into a luxurious boutique hotel. Following World War II, the hotel began to develop a prestigious reputation for its legendary hospitality. Since 2009, Sofitel has operated this magnificent historical treasure as The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta. Tucked away inside Java, Yogyakarta has a long and venerable past. Celebrated for its burgeoning industrial economy, educational contributions, and vibrant art scene, the metropolis attracts countless visitors every year. The city is also the home of Indonesia’s only remaining monarchy—the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Several tremendous UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie just beyond the city’s borders, as well, such as the Borobudur and Prambanan temple complexes. Come stay at The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta to experience this rich heritage firsthand."
