Enjoy a taste of The Commonwealth's history of hospitality at Rueger's, a Southern-inspired restaurant and culinary tribute to the hotel's humble tavern beginnings.

While much of The Commonwealth offers a uniquely 21st-century Richmond experience, Rueger’s, the hotel’s restaurant and bar, stays true to its humble beginnings—with a fresh and modern twist. The restaurant is a culinary homage to the tavern that once opened on the site back in 1846, ultimately expanding into what was then known as the Hotel Rueger (now The Commonwealth). Like the former saloon of yesteryear, Rueger’s uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, crafting Southern comfort food with contemporary flair. Think a Chicken & Waffle Biscuit smothered with house-made maple chicken gravy for breakfast and Commonwealth Chicken Pot Pie for dinner. Diners can also wash their meal down with regionally made beverages like locally roasted coffee, locally brewed craft beer, and locally distilled moonshine.

Along with the restaurant, guests can enjoy the hotel’s version of upscale takeout in the privacy of their guestroom, with freshly prepared dishes from Rueger’s packaged to go. Additionally, a Mercantile is also available 24 hours a day near the front desk. This grab-and-go outlet offers an array of drinks, savory snacks, sweet treats, and breakfast selections for purchase, many of which are Virginia-made.
