Originally a “staging inn” with just one straw bed, Hotel Ullensvang has since grown into a luxurious boutique hotel featuring 168 unique accommodations. The hotel has been run by five generations of the Utne family, since Hans Utne first built the structure all the way back in 1846. Utne obtained his architectural inspiration for the building from the various places that he visited throughout his travels. He specifically was inspired by a rustic cabin that he saw in Lofthus, as well as the beautiful home of the famous Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg. Over the next two centuries, Utne’s descendants gradually expanded the building until it assumed its present appearance today. Hotel Ullensvang resides along the eastern shore of the Sörfjorden, which grants magnificent views of the greater Hardanger mountain range. The nearby town of Lofthus is a whimsical destination for guests seeking a secluded getaway hidden within Norway’s majestic landscape.
