For over 200 years, the Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa in Bedford, Pennsylvania, has been a luxury destination for travelers seeking the health benefits of natural spring water and leisure. The town of Bedford was an early adapter of the game of golf in the United States. The resort is home to one of the nation’s first golf courses, the Bedford Springs Old Course, with 18 holes originally designed by Spencer Oldham in 1895. Oldham was an English immigrant and athletic club employee whose expertise was in the game of cricket. Seeing his potential, his employers sent him to Scotland to learn the craft of golf course design in the 1890s, then brought back to design golf courses in the Mid-Atlantic region at the dawn of the Golden Age of Golf in the early 20th century. After Oldham established the Bedford Springs Old Course, it was redesigned by A.W. Tillinghast in 1912 and again reimagined by the renowned golf course architect Donald Ross in 1923.

While players will be grateful for Oldham clearing a path, literally, Tillinghast and Ross are more renowned for their contributions to the sport: Tillinghast is one of the most prolific golf course architects in history, with 265 under his belt, and Ross designed some of the most notable golf courses in the United States. Both were inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Their contributions to the course at Bedford Springs make it exceptionally noteworthy. When the course was updated in 2007 by architect Ron Forse, he retained the best features contributed by Oldham, Tillinghast, and Ross. The Old Course today is a completely restored and historic golf course featuring bentgrass tees, plush greens, and well-manicured fairways. A round of golf on these historically significant tees is a must-play for golf enthusiasts of all levels. The original hotel opened in 1806 and it was inducted into Historic Hotels of America in 2014.
